Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month is all about raising awareness and breaking the stigma when it comes to mental illness. Nearly 450 million people worldwide are currently living with mental illness or mental health disorders and despite this nearly two thirds of people with a known mental illness never seek treatment. Some of the most common mental health disorders include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and eating disorders. Mental Health month is all about using social media and sharing your #breakthestigma story. It's also about talking about tough topics like suicide prevention so that more people are able to talk and feel like they can be listened too. Around 800,000 people die by suicide globally every year, which is why it is so important to raise awareness and to let people know that they are not alone. Sometimes it can be really hard to know or understand how someone is feeling however talking to someone is the best way to reduce the risk factors as well as possibly being able to understand any warning signs in the future.

Mental Health care used to be one of the most underfunded areas within the NHS however in the last 3 years mental health funding has increased by up to 1.4 billion pounds. It is easier to access the support that you need, there is also support that you can get from your phone, you don't even need to go to out of the house to get advice. Approximately 380,000 children were treated through NHS commissioned community services, this includes counselling sessions in Doctors Surgery's. The mental health foundation has estimated that 1 in 6 people in the past week have experience a common mental health problem. Companies like The Mental Health Foundation focus on prevention and aren't afraid to talk about mental health issues. They have everyone from young people to elderly to feel like they are able to talk about something when it's important, whether that's being burnt out or feeling lonely. They have multiple ways that you can look after your mental health before it becomes a bigger problem. They have a wide selection of blog's that you can follow and see if they help.
