Colouring hair is one of the many ways we express ourselves and show our individuality, but it isn’t exactly good for our hair and it can be quite hard to maintain. I've decided to write about the best colour care shampoo and my hair care tips for maintaining a vibrant, healthy colour.
There are so many factors to consider when thinking about coloured and damaged hair, such as heat styling. Even ammonia free hair dyes lift the cuticles and none of us want damaged hair, but where do we start? there is such a selection of hair care products available, but how do we know which is the right one.
How Colour Damages Our Hair
Ammonia-
A main ingredient to hair colour is Ammonia, although you can buy ammonia free colour these days many brands still contain the toxic ingredient. Ammonia actually breaks through and destroys your hair cuticles, if hair dye didn't do this it would simply sit on the top layer and not stick.
Peroxide-
You may know about peroxide, it’s associated with blondes. Unlike Ammonia that lifts the cuticles, peroxide destroys the colour in your hair completely, leaving it light and blonde. The brighter or whiter the blonde is the stronger the peroxide, so when you’re thinking about going silver maybe you should think twice or at least continue reading and learn which shampoo is best! Peroxide can leave you with dry hair that requires hydrating to keep its shine and vibrancy.
Although hair dye is bad for our hair, we all continue to use it. So with that in mind, here's some tips to keeping your hair healthier, even with the colour.
Don’t wash your hair first -
When you wash your hair you strip it of natural oils, these oils help to protect and maintain both your scalp and hair. By not washing it first you’re basically laying down a cover for the hair dye to grip onto first before it reaches your scalp. In turn it actually helps to keep the colour take to your hair.
Stick between the lines -
It is suggested that you stick between 2 shades of your natural colour. Lightening your hair too much can cause major damage to the cuticles and actually split them open leaving your hair drab and weak, what's the point in having beautifully coloured hair if it is just going to split.
Prepare for the colour-
When you apply colour to your hair, your hair doesn’t expect it and let’s just say goes into shock. To prevent this from happening it is recommended that you use a deep conditioning treatment before you decide to apply the colour. By using a mask or treatment you’re helping to boost the moisture levels and hydrate your hair which will prevent further damage once the colour has been applied.
Avoid Heat Styling-
Using things like straighteners on your hair is never good for it, regardless of the colour. Heat styling basically breaks the hydrogen bonds in your hair, leaving it damaged, burnt and dry. It can snap easily and needs to be hydrated regularly with a hair mask or just take the day off and have natural hair every now and then.
