Spotlight On Wild Nutrition

We caught up with Henrietta, founder of Wild Nutrition to find out everything you need to know about her food-grown supplements!

What inspired you to start Wild Nutrition?

I had been working as Head of Nutrition at a large supplement company along side my clinic work for 7 years. Sadly I became increasingly disillusioned with the industry. The market is dominated by products made from cheap synthetic chemicals (even the more expensive brands are still using these lower grade materials) that the body doesn’t naturally recognise. Often these are delivered in high doses, much of which is not metabolised, and filled with additives. To me, this makes the product a commodity rather than having been made with the intention to heal. I felt so passionately about finding another way that I spent 3 years researching a method to produce nutrients in a food form the body can use. I found it and created Wild Nutrition with my husband in 2013. I am so encouraged to see that there is a strong movement towards this and increasing awareness of the seismic difference that Food-Grown® nutrients can have on nourishing our health. I still work in the clinic because although formulating products is a fine art and requires expertise, I feel it is also important to look beyond the research papers and have first-hand experience with real people and real health issues – we don’t all fit into the ‘norm’. This aspect greatly influences my formulations.

What makes you different to other supplement brands?

We are a brand of Food-Grown® Supplements to support wellbeing for men, women and children. Beyond the fact that our formulations are built on curated expertise within the nutrition industry, our unique difference is how we produce our nutrients; By growing the nutrients in food through our pioneering Food-Grown® process rather than using processed synthetic chemicals, we use only the most body-ready forms of vitamins and minerals.

Tell us more about your Food-Grown technology?

Food-Grown® nutrients are made by molecularly bonding vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C or zinc, into a live food cell. This food cell then metabolises and crucially, re-natures the vitamin or mineral, thereby becoming an integral part of its cellular matrix. This matrix now consists of not only the vitamin or mineral in its natural form but also a host of other nutrients such as glycoproteins, lipids, bioflavonoids and B vitamins. This ‘team’ of nutrients is so closely bonded that it can no longer be divided into its separate parts, just as they are found in a plant cell. In simple terms, the end result of this process is a genuine food cell containing vitamins and minerals in a structure that the body can recognise, metabolise and utilise naturally and efficiently. My belief is that food supplements should be taken with the sole purpose of enhancing the body’s innate ability to heal and restore balance. It is not to add further toxic load or, through mega-dosing, creating imbalance elsewhere.

What supplements do you take?

My supplement routine will ebb and flow with the seasons so during the autumn and winter months I take our Immune Support (I haven’t had a cold since taking it) and Full Spectrum Turmeric. In the summer I take the Antioxidant Boost to support my skin in the sun. I take Magnesium at night to support my sleep and all year round I take the Balance MultiNutrient, High Strength Omega 3.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone thinking about taking supplements?

Choose quality over quantity and look for transparency in a brand. Speaking with a qualified nutritionist or getting the advice of a trained member of a health food store can help you select the right products for you. We have a nutrition line that customers can call to get more specific advice on what products to choose too.

If you only take one supplement what should it be

Our Balance MultiNutrient. It provides a blend of Food-Grown vitamins, minerals and medicinal mushrooms for reducing the symptoms of tiredness and fatigue as well as supporting the nervous system and resilience to stress. It flies off the shelves because it works!

What are the benefits of taking supplements?

The sad fact is that our food simply isn’t as nutrient dense as it once was. Because of harvesting techniques, intensive farming and the use of pesticides and fertilisers, European soil is now estimated to be 72% less nutrient-rich than it was 60 years ago, meaning that the vital vitamins and minerals in our ‘fresh’ fruit and vegetables have been greatly depleted. Even ‘healthier’ organic food can be up to 10 times less nutritious than it once was. Add to this the increasing number of us on medication or exposed to greater environmental stress and we have a significant physiological gap between ‘supply and demand’. So supplements can really help to bridge that nutrition gap and support many functions including hormone balance, energy and our general daily wellbeing.

Are there some supplements that shouldn't be taken together?

High doses of minerals can sometimes block the absorption of other minerals so high doses in general are not recommended. Instead choose forms that can be well used by the body and therefore require a lower dose.

What are the best supplements to take in the Spring/ Summer?

How important is sustainability to you?

Crucial. And it applies to all areas of our life - sustainable ways of eating and living are vital for the health of our planet and our internal environment too. The work of Satish Kumar Soil Soul and Society was a very inspiring read for me.

What is your best beauty secret?

Sleep - although its not much of a secret because I am militant in our house about getting it! Bucket loads of fresh air and laughter - some may argue its not so good for facial lines but it is food for the soul and that radiates through the skin!

How do you relax and unwind?

I live in the heart of the South Downs so it would be sacrilege for walking not to be one of my favoured ways to unwind - whatever the weather, it never fails to lift the spirit. I am also a trained yoga teacher and I move and meditate every day. And of course there is the joy of feasting with friends and family over nourishing food and flowing conversation and laughter - one of life’s most precious tonics.

What does the future have in store for Wild Nutrition?

We are at a very exciting stage with Wild Nutrition. Charlie (my husband and co-founder) and I began this journey over 7 years ago and it really is inspiring to see it grow with such strength and grace. The future for us is to facilitate the continuation of this growth and to deepen our commitment to environmental sustainability through product development, packaging and education.
