Benefits Of Seaweed In Skincare

Seaweed is a natural and organic ingredient that is cropping up in skincare more and more. Using seaweed has so many benefits and following on from trying to encourage a more clean and sustainable skincare routine I thought I would share some of the benefits with you.

As more people desire natural and organic skincare, brands are reaching out and trying new ingredients and I can’t think of a better place to start. There are so many types of seaweed each individual and unique but they all offer us something a synthetic chemical might not. There are 3 main types of seaweed, green, brown and red and they all carry a number of different health benefits.

The confusing thing with seaweed skincare products is the name on the ingredients list. It won’t always say seaweed, here are the terms to look out for.

Carrageenan - This is a substance extracted from red seaweed that grows in the cold Atlantic oceans. This is used as a thickening agent in many skincare products.

Oarweed - Otherwise known as Laminaria Digitata, is a brown alga found in the north Atlantic Ocean. Oarweed is hydrating and its known for holding onto large amounts of water.

Bladderwrack - Fucus vesiculosus or Bladderwrack is found in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans as well as the western Baltic Sea. Bladderwrack is well known for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties.

Kelps- Kelps are brown algae that grow in shallow waters in underwater forests. Praised for its healing, firming and exfoliating properties.

Why Use Seaweed in Skincare?

Seaweed is a natural source of vitamins, minerals and macro-elements, that offer protection against environmental aggressors, keep your skin looking youthful and hydrated. Seaweed is also a natural source of amino acids. There are so many benefits to using seaweed not just in skincare, but in everyday life, not to mention it being suitable for all skin types.

Seaweed products contain natural anti-ageing, anti cellulite and improve the all round suppleness of your skin and reduce fine lines and is packed full of detoxifying ingredients.

Seaweed is a sustainable product to harvest because the environmental effects are minimal. Seaweed absorbs the nutrients it needs from the waters and the sun to grow and grows in large amounts across the world.

We have many brands that focus on saving our oceans, being sustainable and use seaweed extract in their products. We have caught up with Haeckels, a brand that focuses on being sustainable and organic to find out about them and why they love seaweed.

Haeckels Q&A -

Where does your love of the ocean come from?

Moving to Margate was when everything changed for me. Spending time by the shore did wonderful things to my mind, it stilled and emptied it, leaving room for fresh ideas to flourish. Haeckels was born by the sea and will continue to grow by it.

What are the benefits of seaweed in skincare?

Seaweed is abundant in benefits, it’s anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and helps rebuild the skin. We have many emails from our customers who tell us it has had a dramatically positive effect on skincare conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

What would your advice be to someone who is trying to be more sustainable?

Starting, however small, is better than doing nothing at all; and don’t beat yourself up if you can’t do it all at once. What a lot of people don’t understand is that sustainability goes way beyond packaging, paper straws and bags; it’s using renewable energy, locally sourced ingredients, dedicating focus to the emotional sustainability of your team. A lot of companies are using sustainability as a marketing tool because they know people are worried about the future of our planet. It’s not ok to take advantage of peoples’ insecurities. Having said that, nobody is perfect, we certainly aren’t, but we are dedicated to continuing making positive change.

What does the future hold for Haeckels?

Our Bladderwrack Seaweed. We hold one of the very few licenses to sustainably harvest seaweed from the UK coast and we’re really proud of that.

How do you ensure your brand stays as sustainable as possible?

It’s a continuous process. At the beginning of the year we hired a bio-designer whose sole focus is on researching and creating new materials that go beyond being sustainable.

How do you ensure your products are high quality?

They’re created and formulated by humans, made by humans and tested on humans.

What is your favourite Haeckels product?

Our Exfoliating Vegan Seaweed Block, because it was the first product I created and has lots of good memories attached to it. It’s also one of our best-selling products!

We hope you enjoyed our Q&A with Haeckels! All products mentioned in this blog can be purchased on Calissa!
